OctoPrint v1.10.0 Released (5 minute read)

Wednesday saw the release of OctoPrint v1.10.0 (GitHub). The update included a whole mess of security updates, features and improvements, and bug fixes. One of the interesting ones we spotted was a new, bundled achievements plugin which can keep track of certain stats of that machine and allow you to “discover” achievements. Stats tracked can also give you overall usage stats for that specific instance of OctoPrint. The developers state that the object is not to gamify, but rather provide a fun way to keep track of 3D printing stats while you print!

UMaine Unveils World’s Largest Polymer 3D Printer (4 minute read)

The University of Maine (UMaine) unveiled the world's largest polymer 3D printer, Factory of the Future 1.0 (FoF 1.0). This printer is four times larger than its predecessor and can create objects up to 96 feet long. The FoF 1.0 is expected to revolutionize many industries including national security, affordable housing, and renewable energy. It can print complex multi-material objects and collaborate with its predecessor on large projects.

UMaine has already used similar 3D printers to create houses, wind turbine molds, and boat hulls. The FoF 1.0 is expected to be used for similar purposes, but on a much larger scale. The introduction of FoF 1.0 comes alongside the development of a new research facility focused on green manufacturing techniques. This facility aims to tackle workforce shortages and supply chain limitations.
