UWāMadison engineers mark 3D printing milestone in race to in-space manufacturing (3 minute read) - Link
Researchers at UW-Madison achieved a breakthrough in 3D printing, enabling printing of electronic parts in zero gravity. This NASA-funded project could revolutionize space travel by allowing astronauts to manufacture replacement parts on-demand. Traditional 3D printing wouldn't work in space, so the team developed a special technique called EHD printing that uses electrical force to push materials through a tiny nozzle.
This method can also create very small features on Earth. After overcoming challenges during initial testing, they successfully printed with different materials in zero gravity. The next steps are to integrate this technology with a multi-tool printer and potentially test it on the International Space Station. This achievement brings us closer to self-sufficient space exploration.
Designer Iris van Herpen Unveils First 3D Printed Wedding Dress (3 minute read) - Link
Brazilian bride Mariana Pavani walked down the aisle in a revolutionary wedding dress ā the first of its kind completely 3D printed. Designed by Dutch fashion icon Iris van Herpen, the dress wasn't just stunning, it was also a technological feat.
The intricate bodice and neckline were crafted from 3D printed nylon, designed to appear delicate yet surprisingly flexible and durable. To achieve a perfect fit, Pavani's body was 3D scanned, ensuring the seamless 3D printed elements flowed flawlessly with the hand-pleated skirt. This wasn't van Herpen's first foray into 3D printed fashion, but it marked a significant step ā a one-of-a-kind wedding dress tailored specifically for the bride's special day. The 3D design itself took a staggering 600 hours to complete, followed by a 41-hour printing process.
This unique dress perfectly embodies van Herpen's design philosophy, which blends traditional couture techniques with cutting-edge technology. For Pavani, the dress was a dream come true, offering a unique and unforgettable way to walk down the aisle.
š Cool 3D Prints
Itās getting to be that time of year in the Midwest (and other northerly wooded areas) where ticks start to become an issue. Sometimes when you find one on you, itās quite difficult to remove. Thatās where this 3D print comes in handy. This print comes in three different sizes that you can use depending on the size of the tick you find on you. Print these out now and be prepared the rest of the season. (Note: If you feel a tick has been on you for some time, you may want to visit a professional to get it removed.)
Print in Place Scissor Lift (Whopping Printer on Maker World) - Link
We always love to see print in place models, especially ones that are really intricate like this one. This even prints with no supports. Once youāve printed it out you just need to gently work some of the joints and then use the screw knob to move the scissor lift up and down. This could make a cool little decoration at your desk. Use it to āhold upā your monitor, maybe your head phones, or anything else that needs a little support.
