Reddit User BrockenRecords Plays Music on His BambuLab X1C - Link

While not exactly 3D printing news, we were blown away at Reddit user, BrockenRecord’s post where they was able to use the sound generated from the movement of his X1C to play music from the video game Portal. According to BrockenRecords, they were able to use a midi slicer which converted the midi file into a gcode file which produced these results. Check out the link in the headline or in the picture below to check out the video and the discussion!

Hexagon Releases It’s First Handheld 3D Scanners (3 minute read) - Link

Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence introduced two new handheld 3D scanners, ATLASCAN Max and MARVELSCAN. These scanners are lightweight, portable, and can be used in various environments for capturing 3D data of parts. This caters to a wider range of applications in fields like automotive, rail, and general manufacturing.

A key benefit is the ability to scan without fixing parts in place, saving time and allowing for more flexibility. The scanners can also capture data from multiple holes and slots in a single scan, further improving efficiency. MARVELSCAN's built-in photogrammetry eliminates the need for placing targets on parts, making it ideal for scanning large, delicate, or repetitive components.

Both scanners are wireless and user-friendly, allowing for unrestricted movement during scanning and integration into automated inspection processes. This makes them a valuable tool for engineers and manufacturing personnel.

3D Printed, Defect Free Tungsten Components for Fusion Energy (2 minute read) - Link

Scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are using 3D printing to create high-quality tungsten components for fusion reactors. This is a major breakthrough because traditional tungsten is brittle at room temperature.

Fusion energy offers a clean and sustainable energy source, but requires materials that can withstand extreme heat and radiation. Tungsten is ideal for this due to its high melting point, but it's normally too brittle.

ORNL's 3D printing technique uses an electron beam to melt tungsten powder layer-by-layer in a vacuum, preventing contamination and brittleness. This paves the way for more efficient and safer fusion reactors.

The technology also has potential applications in other high-temperature industrial settings, contributing to a sustainable, carbon-free future.

Shaker Siphon for Garden Hose (DrJones on Printables) - Link

For those of you with gardens and rain barrels, this thing can be a life saver. Rather than trying to use buckets to empty your rain barrel, or siphoning with your mouth you can simply print this, attach it to a garden hose, and siphon away. The way this works is that you simply shake it up and down in the water to introduce the siphon effect. Then let gravity take over and empty the rail barrel to your desired level.

Desk Drawer (Vixvvo 3D on Thingiverse) - Link

If you’ve been working from home and got yourself a full office setup this could be a life save. Many home office desks are more table tops on some legs without all the extra compartments a normal desk may have. In comes this model. With just a few hours of printing you can now have a drawer to store pens, papers, or whatever else is cluttering up your desk!
